The Agly region
A soil authentically catharian
As one follows the Agly upstream, this Northern-most river of the Pyrénées-Orientales region guides us to the higher grounds of the catalane vineyards. For ages these vines have been digging their roots into the black shale and layered schist, the surface of which are swept by strong northern winds that whimsically frolic the rocky mountain peaks where the renowned catharian castles tower majestically. On grounds such as these, the Lafage Estate comes scouring for the sumptuous and authentic traditional catalane varieties such as the Muscat, the Black Grenache and the Carignan. These vine stocks, that have stood the harsh test of time, are the legends in the history of our local wines, which owe what they are to what they have gained from the noble qualities of the catalane soil.
