Jean-Marc Lafage and Eliane Salinas-Lafage,
owner of the Lafage Estate
For six generations, since the end of the 19th century, the Lafage family has been cultivating vine on catalan soil. 36 years of age, and passionate about his roots, Jean-Marc Lafage has taken over the relay. After finishing his High School diploma, specializing in agriculture, Jean Marc obtained a Foundation degree in Wine Production (BTS vitiœno) and put the finishing touches on his academicals by obtaining a diploma in Oenology. The final year of studies was fruitful in more than one way, since it was then that he met Eliane, whose wine-broker grandfather led her to her calling. Together they left for the Gallo Winery in California, where they were introduced to the foreigner’s version of the art of wine-making. The following step was to obtain a DESS (Diploma of Higher Specialist Studies) in Wine and Champagne Marketing, which they both accomplished, attending training courses in some of the biggest wine-houses. With a thirst for experience they left for Australia, South Africa and Chili. Yet the powerful desire to be own-rooted and to produce THEIR wine was too strong to resist: « We knew that we were going to settle down on an estate » Jean-Marc confides. In 1996, they bought Le Vignon and fashioned it to the desire of their heart’s conviction. « We have redone, cleared, replanted everything.» remembers Eliane.
